Bowl For Health
What is the programme?
Bowl for Health is a six week programme delivered by Formby Village Bowling Club and supported by MSP (formerly Merseyside Sports Partnership). The aim of the course is to improve the physical and mental health and wellbeing of older adults (one of Sport England’s key priorities) in the Formby and wider Sefton area.
The long-term aim of the programme would be to support participants to join a local bowls club to
carry on playing, and by the end of the eight week programme participants will:
Each session would start with a re-cap of the previous week and an opportunity to ask questions. As
the weeks progress more pointers will be introduced to help participants improve their technique
and understanding of the game.
Anybody over the age of 55 can join the six week programme, and we feel that the course may have significant benefits for people who:
Participants must be able to commit to attending all six sessions and be able to get to the club (Rosemary Lane, Formby, Liverpool, L37 3HA).
Participants will also be asked to complete a pre-course and post-course evaluation questionnaire to help ascertain the benefits that they have experienced as a result of taking part.
When will it take place?
We are looking to put on two six week Bowl for Health courses, starting:
The sessions will take place at the same time each week for six weeks. There will be four spaces available on each course.
Who is delivering the sessions?
All sessions will be delivered by David Croot, a qualified British Crown Green Bowling Association coach (licence number 7/92040/L1). The main point of contact from the club is Eric Gowling, who will speak to all participants before the course starts and will introduce them to the coach and club members. Both David and Eric hold up to date DBS certificates.
The club has a first aid kit and defibrillator in the adjacent clubhouse, and participants are also covered under the club’s public liability insurance (Allianz Insurance policy no: 20/SB/13556600/07).
Bowl for Health has had an appropriate Risk Assessment in place, plus the club has a Safeguarding Policy.
How can I refer someone to attend?
Anyone interested in attending can book a place or find out more information by contacting Eric Gowling on 079490 91302 or by emailing ericgowling@btinternet.com.
Eric will contact the participant to talk them through what the course entails and answer any questions that they may have. The participants will receive an information sheet with all of the relevant club information on, plus Eric will also be present at all of the sessions to ensure that participants are made to feel welcome.

- Specific skills include correct grip, stance, delivery rhythm and action, good alignment, correct position of the non-bowling arm for good balance, keeping the head still and in the correct position, picking a line when bowling/following the ‘jack’, distancecontrol, how to score, correct measuring, green etiquette and awareness.
