Proposed Programme
The following programme has been designed by our own British Crown Green Bowling Association qualified coach.
Overriding principles:
- The initial emphasis would be on achieving social interaction between members of the group by creating a relaxed and informal relationship between coach and participants.
- The next stage would be to introduce structure into the group. To achieve this we would suggest recruiting groups of four people, developing the basic skills of the game and encouraging them to play friendly, but competitive, games.
- We have the capacity to recruit and manage two groups of four people a week. Initially the aim would be to keep each group together so they are all at the same point on the learning curve.
- We would be mindful to assess the physical capability (or disability) of individuals and adjust the programme accordingly.
- The skill set would include: understanding the rules of Crown Green Bowling, the traditions and conventions, how the bias of the ‘jack’ and ‘bowl’ works and how this is counteracted by the ‘crown’ of the Green. Specific skills would include: correct grip, stance, delivery rhythm and action, good alignment, correct position of the non-bowling arm for good balance, keeping the head still and in the correct position, picking a line when bowling/following the ‘jack’, distance control, how to score, correct measuring, green etiquette and awareness. Later sessions would also include an introduction to different strategies for out-thinking opponents. Each session would start with a re-cap of the previous week and an opportunity to ask questions. As the weeks progress more pointers will be introduced to help participants improve their technique and understanding of the game.
- Every session would include playing a game and putting into practice the skills demonstrated by the coach.
- Each programme would include a trip to another club to experience the variation that exists between Greens at different clubs.
- We propose to run two groups of 4 people, one starting on Wednesday 4th May and the other on Thursday 5th May. Both will commence at 11.00am and we anticipate both of them running for 6 consecutive weeks.
Hopefully the outcome will be someone who is re-energised, fitter, has established new relationships and been equipped with the skills to join Formby Village Bowling Club or any other local club.
